Don't Forget Your Ears! Why This Often-Missed Spot Needs Sunscreen NOW

Enjoying the sunny weather? We bet you're diligently applying sunscreen to your face. But are you forgetting your **ears**? A U.S. dermatologist recently issued a strong warning: neglecting sunscreen on your ears can lead to serious trouble. Surprisingly, many fatal skin cancers actually start on this often-missed area.

Dr. Michael Park, a dermatologist based in Minneapolis, Minnesota, recently shared on social media that he frequently performs surgical excisions for ear skin cancers. He revealed, "During my time at a melanoma specialty clinic, I saw countless patients with skin cancer on their ears." He emphasized that many people underestimate simple skin cancers, but "malignant melanoma can be fatal if not detected early."

Why Your Ears Need Sunscreen

Despite being as exposed to the sun as your face, your ears are a spot many of us tend to forget when applying sunscreen. Dr. Park strongly urges everyone to make applying sunscreen to their ears a daily habit, starting this summer.

Malignant melanoma is the most dangerous form of skin cancer, accounting for a staggering 80% of all skin cancer deaths. What's even more surprising is that about 90% of skin cancers are caused by UV exposure or artificial tanning beds, which means **they are largely preventable.**

A comment from an SNS user on Dr. Park's video highlights just how real this warning is: "I had basal cell carcinoma, a type of skin cancer. I had to have the cancer inside my ear removed, and it was incredibly painful." While basal cell carcinoma is relatively slow-growing and has a high survival rate, Dr. Park notes, "Even if you survive, you'll likely have to have a portion of your skin removed. Treatment is mostly surgical, and sometimes healthy skin needs to be excised to prevent recurrence." This isn't just about aesthetics; it's directly linked to your health.

Skin Cancer: Closer Than You Think

In the UK, approximately 15,000 people are diagnosed with melanoma each year, making it the fifth most common cancer in the country. The incidence of melanoma has increased by nearly 30% in the last decade alone – a reminder that this isn't just someone else's problem.

The NHS (UK National Health Service) provides these recommendations for skin protection:

  • Avoid outdoor activities between **11 AM and 3 PM.**
  • Wear **long clothing.**
  • **Reapply SPF 30+ sunscreen frequently.**

From now on, when you apply sunscreen, please give your ears as much attention as your face. This small habit can go a long way in protecting your precious skin and overall health. Let's all enjoy a sun-safe summer!
